Off To War

Albert Ball went off to fight in the “war to end all wars.”  Through the generous contribution of his niece, Ann Staples, we are permitted to share some of his letters back home written from the battlefields of France.

 “Dear Mother,

I received your letter and also the box yesterday evening.  Wilbur C, Jesse and I built us this little fire last night, warmed the canned chili and tomatoes, and enjoyed a square meal. As before, I was tickled over the jar of chili more than anything else in the box.  The chili surely flavors up these beans and things.  Many thanks for sending it…”
