Ruth Farrington Gibbs Faris recalls her first date:
“I remember the first time I had a date. Mother permitted me to go in an automobile with a young man to drive around Huntsville—around the square and up to the college. That was the first place that was paved. She said, ‘William will take you to the drug store to buy you a drink…You can have a coca cola for 5 cents, but you must not have what you like, chocolate milk, because that’s 10 cents. Coca cola will cost him a nickel, and that is all you must have when you are out with a young man.’”
