enthusiast, participate in the Huntsville Public Library’s 8th Annual Friends of the Huntsville Public Library Art Contest this spring. This contest is open for students aged 5-18, and the deadline to submit is Friday, February 23, 2018. Winners will be formally announced at the Artwork Unveiling Ceremony at 5:30 p.m. Friday, March 23, 2018. Come to the library to pick up your entry form and contest rules today! "Planting Your Spring Vegetable Garden" Workshop2018-02-19T10:30:00Huntsville Public Library is pleased to host the Walker County Master Gardeners “Planting Your Spring Vegetable Garden” workshop from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Monday, February 19 in the Library’s Community Room. The Master Gardeners will discuss tips about fertilization, weed and insect control, plant selection and harvesting guidelines, composting, and mulching. Texas Master Gardeners are members of the local community who have been accepted into the Master Gardener training program in Walker County. They have attended 50 hours of instruction, and have committed 50 hours of volunteer service to Walker County’s Texas Cooperative Extension program in order to attain certification. The group is committed to educating others in the community about a variety of horticulture-related topics. Their workshops and presentations are presented in an engaging manner that is conducive for learning. Door prizes will be awarded.

Chronic Pain Self-Management Workshop2018-02-19T13:00:00Do you suffer from chronic pain? Learn how to ease your symptoms through stress management, exercise, and nutrition. The 2 ½ hour classes starting at 1 p.m. on Monday, January 29 will also feature how to get a good night’s sleep and how to deal with depression. Hosted by the Huntsville Public Library, the series of six classes will occur weekly through March 12. The classes are sponsored by the Texas A&M Center for Population Health and Aging and the Houston-Galveston Area Agency on Aging. The workshops are free and limited to 16 participants. For more information and registration, contact Ce Schlicher at 936-436- 0442. Dates are: January 29, February 5, February 12, February 19, February 26, March 5, and March 12. This program is for adults 17 and older.

Pilates student teachers from the SHSU Department of Dance will teach a weekly class from 5:45 PM to 6:30 PM starting Monday, February 19 in the Community Room at the Huntsville Public Library. The Huntsville Public Library is partnering with the SHSU Center for Community Engagement for this program. Pilates classes build strength, flexibility and lean muscle tone with an emphasis on lengthening the body and aligning the spine. Benefits include production of muscle tone that doesn’t create bulk, overall slimming, greatly improved flexibility and increased mobility, even in just a short time. Please bring your own towel or mat. Consult your doctor before starting any new exercise program. Liability waivers are required to participate and are available from the instructor.
