enthusiast, participate in the Huntsville Public Library’s 8th Annual Friends of the Huntsville Public Library Art Contest this spring. This contest is open for students aged 5-18, and the deadline to submit is Friday, February 23, 2018. Winners will be formally announced at the Artwork Unveiling Ceremony at 5:30 p.m. Friday, March 23, 2018. Come to the library to pick up your entry form and contest rules today! Huntsville Public Library is pleased to host the Walker County Master Gardeners “Planting Your Spring Vegetable Garden” workshop from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Monday, February 19 in the Library’s Community Room. The Master Gardeners will discuss tips about fertilization, weed and insect control, plant selection and harvesting guidelines, composting, and mulching. Texas Master Gardeners are members of the local community who have been accepted into the Master Gardener training program in Walker County. They have attended 50 hours of instruction, and have committed 50 hours of volunteer service to Walker County’s Texas Cooperative Extension program in order to attain certification. The group is committed to educating others in the community about a variety of horticulture-related topics. Their workshops and presentations are presented in an engaging manner that is conducive for learning. Door prizes will be awarded.

Do you have children ages 2 or under? Then Mother Goose Lapsit is a story time designed for you! Held on Mondays at 10:30 a.m., enjoy a half-hour of developmentally appropriate play featuring stories, songs, and rhymes. This program introduces little ones to the story time experience and is perfect for their language development and developing vocabulary. Sign-up is not required.

Do you suffer from chronic pain? Learn how to ease your symptoms through stress management, exercise, and nutrition. The 2 ½ hour classes starting at 1 p.m. on Monday, January 29 will also feature how to get a good night’s sleep and how to deal with depression. Hosted by the Huntsville Public Library, the series of six classes will occur weekly through March 12. The classes are sponsored by the Texas A&M Center for Population Health and Aging and the Houston-Galveston Area Agency on Aging. The workshops are free and limited to 16 participants. Get in on the fun! Play Texas 42 at the Huntsville Public Library. Texas 42 is a dominoes game similar in style to bridge and spades. It is held from 1 to 3 p.m. Mondays in February at the Library. Studies show playing dominoes can be beneficial for the mind as attention to detail and strategy are essential to play. So, come to the Library each week and strategize your winning moves. We’ll supply the dominoes and refreshments. Games will be played weekly if 4 or more players register. This program is for adults 18 years and older. Pilates is a great way to strengthen your abs, reduce back pain and hone your focus. Pilates student teachers from the SHSU Department of Dance will teach a weekly class from 5:45 PM to 6:30 PM starting Monday, February 19 in the Community Room at the Huntsville Public Library. The Huntsville Public Library is partnering with the SHSU Center for Community Engagement for this program. Pilates classes build strength, flexibility and lean muscle tone with an emphasis on lengthening the body and aligning the spine. Benefits include production of muscle tone that doesn’t create bulk, overall slimming, greatly improved flexibility and increased mobility, even in just a short time. Please bring your own towel or mat. Consult your doctor before starting any new exercise program. Liability waivers are required to participate and are available from the instructor.
