Huntsville Public Library offers free Adult Basic Education and English as a Second Language tutoring to adults.The Literacy Program is staffed by trained volunteers and all services and materials are provided free of charge. The Literacy Program is affiliated with Pro-Literacy America and Literacy Texas.
The Huntsville Public Library will host free GED classes taught by Lone Star College
staff (dates to be announced). Students are required to attend Orientation from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, September 22 to enroll. Students 19 years and older should bring valid government-issued photo ID. Students 18 years of age and younger, in addition to the ID, need a self-consent form, a parental consent form, and a withdrawal form from their previous institution. Adult Basic Education
These 1-on-1 tutorials cover the fundamentals of reading, writing, and mathematics. The curriculum is designed to equip new readers with the skills to handle most literacy-related tasks.
English as a Second Language
These 1-on-1 and small group sessions cover the fundamentals of English conversation, reading, writing, and comprehension. Tutors do not need to speak a foreign language.
Volunteers are needed to assist adult learners to improve their literacy skills. Tutor candidates may apply at the Huntsville Public Library. Candidates will be required to submit a release for a background check. It is not necessary to speak Spanish.
Be willing to commit to a minimum of 2 hours per week of tutoring

Citizenship Preparation Course
The Huntsville Public Library in conjunction with the Sam Houston State University (SHSU) Center for Law, Engagement, and Politics (LEAP) presents a free Citizenship Preparation Course.
The course is designed to prepare immigrants for the U. S. Naturalization Test and will cover the application process, oral interview, and exam. All materials will be provided free of charge. The classes are taught by Mike Yawn, Political Science Professor at SHSU.
